Dust mites cannot drink. They absorb moisture from the air, so when you hold a room below 50% humidity for around a week, the mites in your carpet, curtains and sofa die. It is the only product on this list that treats the whole room rather than one surface. The honest catch: it only works with the windows kept shut for most of the day. If you love sleeping with the window open, skip this and put the money into the bed instead.

Here is the item most guides miss. If your bed has a fabric headboard, an upholstered base or a divan, there is a mite habitat sitting directly underneath your freshly sealed mattress: soft, warm and impossible to encase. Honest limits first: no vacuum reaches the mites living deep inside a mattress, that is the protector's job. What a HEPA vacuum does brilliantly is remove the allergen waste from the surfaces mites also live on: the sofa, the curtains, the car seats, the mattress surface before you fit the protector. The spray kills mites on contact on fabrics, rugs and soft furnishings, and it is the cheapest thing on this list. I will be straight with you though: if you have already tried a spray and it did not fix it, that is normal. Spray is short-term relief, not a solution. Mites breed faster than you can spray. Use it on the sofa, the car and the soft toys while the protectors and dehumidifier do the permanent work.

Air Purifier

Surprised to see this so low? We sell air purifiers, and we still talk most customers out of buying one. Here is why: dust mite allergen is heavy and settles onto surfaces quickly, so a purifier only catches a fraction of it, and the airflow can even stir settled allergen back up into the air you breathe. If your budget is limited, a purifier is the wrong place for it.

Who it genuinely helps: people with all-day airborne symptoms, homes with pets or pollen allergies on top of dust mites, and rooms where humidity control is not possible. Even then, only after the bed is sealed.
