Why Your Allergies Get Better When You Leave Home, and Worse When You Come Back

You go away for a week. By day three your skin has calmed down, your eyes are not itching, and you wake up without that thick, blocked feeling in your nose. You feel almost normal. Then you get home, sleep one night in your own bed, and by morning it is all back, sometimes worse than before you left.

If you have ever asked why do my allergies get worse at home, you are not imagining it and you are not being dramatic. There is a well documented biological reason for it, and once you understand it, the pattern stops being a mystery and starts being something you can actually do something about.


The pattern almost nobody gets told about

I have spoken to hundreds of people with this problem, and the same story comes up again and again. Symptoms for years. Told it was stress, or age, or "just hay fever". Creams, tablets, nasal sprays, none of it fixing the cause.

Then something takes them out of their own home for a while. A holiday. A stay with family. In some cases a spell in hospital for something else entirely. And while they are away, the thing they have lived with for years quietly switches off. Coming home switches it back on.

That gap between "away" and "home" is the single most useful piece of information an allergy sufferer can have. It tells you the trigger is not inside you. It is inside your house.


Why do my allergies get worse at home? Start with your bed

Most people picture dust as the grey fluff on a shelf. The thing actually causing the reaction is much smaller. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live in bedding, mattresses, pillows, carpets and sofas. They feed on the dead skin we shed, and it is their droppings, not the mites themselves, that trigger the allergic reaction.

Your bed is the worst place in the house for this, for three simple reasons:

  1. It is warm, dark and slightly humid, which is exactly what mites need to breed.
  2. It is fed a fresh supply of skin every single night.
  3. You press your face into it for around eight hours a day, which is roughly a third of your life.

Scientists measure this as micrograms of mite allergen per gram of dust. The numbers are worth seeing side by side.

So an ordinary year old mattress is sitting at two to three times the level known to trigger asthma symptoms. Nobody is doing anything wrong. That is just what happens to a bed.


Why allergy symptoms are worse at night and first thing in the morning

Here is the part that explains the "I wake up sneezing every single morning" experience.

Dust mite droppings are heavy as airborne particles go, around 20 to 30 microns across. They do not float around the room all day. Once disturbed, they drop out of the air within about 15 to 20 minutes.

That sounds like good news, and it is the reason air testing in a bedroom often comes back looking fine. But it means the exposure is not ambient. It happens when you disturb the bed. Rolling over, pulling the duvet back, plumping a pillow, making the bed in the morning. Each of those launches a cloud of allergen a few inches from your face, and you breathe it in.

At the same time, your body is at its weakest point. In the early hours, your natural cortisol level bottoms out, your airways narrow slightly, and your reactivity goes up. Maximum exposure meeting minimum defence is why mornings are the worst part of the day for so many sufferers.


The reason the first night home feels so brutal

This is called the priming effect, first shown back in 1969, and it is the missing piece.

When you are exposed to an allergen every single day, the lining of your nose and airways stays permanently inflamed. Inflamed tissue reacts to far smaller doses than healthy tissue. Research found that daily exposure can drop the trigger threshold by more than fivefold.

Now think about what a week away does. The inflammation starts settling. The lining partly heals. You feel great. Then you come home and that partly healed, still highly sensitive tissue meets a full concentrated dose in your own bed.

The reaction is completely out of proportion to a single night's exposure. That is not you being oversensitive. That is a primed immune system doing exactly what it is designed to do.

What does not work

If you have already tried things and got nowhere, this is probably why.

  • An air purifier on its own. Purifiers are genuinely good for pollen and pet dander, which stay suspended in the air. They cannot pull a heavy mite particle out of a mattress, and the exposure happens inches from your face after you have already disturbed the bed.
  • Washing bedding at 40 degrees. It washes away some of the allergen but leaves the live mites almost entirely intact, so the population rebuilds immediately. 60 degrees kills dust mites. 40 does not.
  • Vacuuming and cleaning harder. Constant hoovering is exhausting, and on its own the evidence does not show it controls symptoms.
  • One single measure, anything. A 2008 review concluded dust mite avoidance does not work, and a lot of doctors still repeat it. That review mostly tested single measures, like a spray on its own, often on people who were not even mite allergic. It is a fair criticism of doing one small thing. It is not evidence that controlling your exposure is pointless.

What actually works

The evidence shifted decisively in 2017, when a properly designed trial tested mite proof bed encasings on 434 children who were mite allergic and had recently been in hospital with an asthma attack.

Children given genuine mite proof bed encasings had a 45% lower risk of ending up in emergency care over the following year, compared with children given lookalike placebo covers. Murray et al, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2017

That is the strongest single piece of evidence in this whole field, and note what it tested. Not sprays. Not purifiers. Sealing the bed.

Current UK guidance from NICE and BSACI now takes a practical line: if you are mite allergic, do several things together rather than one thing on its own. In order of impact:

  1. Seal the bed. Mattress, pillows and duvet, all six sides, in covers with a pore size small enough to block the allergen. This is the non negotiable first step.
  2. Get the humidity below 50%. Mites take water straight from the air and die without it. A dehumidifier does more than most people expect.
  3. Wash bedding weekly at 60 degrees, or protect the duvet and pillows so you do not have to.
  4. Hard bed frame and hard flooring rather than a fabric divan and carpet, where you can.
  5. Then the extras: vacuum, spray, air purifier.

One honest caveat: it might not be dust mites

The "better away, worse at home" pattern is not proof of a mite allergy on its own. Other things in a UK home cause exactly the same pattern:

  • Damp and mould. The English Housing Survey covering 2023 to 2024 found 5% of English homes, around 1.3 million households, living with a damp problem, rising to roughly 10% in privately rented homes. Mould and mites share the same driver, which is humidity.
  • Pets, whose allergen behaves completely differently and travels on clothing.
  • Gas cooking, poor ventilation, VOCs from furnishings, and fragranced cleaning products, which irritate airways without any allergy involved.

If you want certainty, the route is a proper clinical history plus skin prick testing or a specific IgE blood test through your GP. Be aware that NHS allergy clinic waits commonly run to 13 to 18 weeks. Avoid commercial IgG "intolerance" tests, which BSACI and NICE both reject as clinically meaningless.

Worth knowing if you are a parent: in August 2026 NICE published updated draft guidance recommending Acarizax, a daily under the tongue tablet that treats the underlying dust mite allergy rather than masking it, for children aged 5 to 11 on the NHS. It was already recommended for ages 12 to 65. Ask your GP about a referral.

If your allergies get better when you leave home and worse when you come back, your house is telling you where the problem lives. In most cases the answer to why do my allergies get worse at home is sitting under your bedsheets, and it has been quietly reloading every night for years.
