You can, and the protectors are the one step we would never tell you to skip. But dust mites do not only live in your mattress. They live in your duvet, your carpets, your sofa and your curtains, and they thrive in humid air. If you seal the bed and change nothing else, you are still breathing allergens all day. the bed frame is only essential if you sleep on a fabric divan base or headboard, which is one of the best places in the room for mites to live and one of the hardest to clean.

it is designed to run quietly overnight in a bedroom. Aim to keep the room below 50% humidity, which usually means running it most of the day rather than constantly. Once your room is dry, it works much less to hold that level.

Use the HEPA vacuum on anything you cannot wash: your mattress top, sofas, curtains, rugs and soft furnishings, roughly once a month. Use the eucalyptus spray on delicate items that cannot take a 60°C wash, like a duvet you are not ready to replace or a child's soft toys.
