Why a normal mattress protector doesn't stop bed bugs

Adult bed bugs are 4–7mm long. Nymphs are around 1mm and their eggs are smaller still. They live in the piping, seams, handles and underside of a mattress — exactly the places a fitted protector leaves open. Every night they climb out, feed, and go back in.

The only way to stop that cycle is to enclose the mattress completely. Our encasement is woven to a 5 micron pore size (a bed bug egg is roughly 500 microns), zips shut around the full circumference, and stays on. Anything inside stays inside until it dies. Nothing new gets in.

It's not just the mattress

Bed bugs also settle inside pillows and duvets. Pillowcases and duvet covers don't help — the bugs are in the filling, not the cover. You have two ways to deal with that.

Option 2 — Lower cost, more effort

Seal the mattress, hot-wash the rest

Encase the mattress, then machine-wash your entire duvet and entire pillows — not just the covers — at 60°C. A 60°C wash kills bed bugs and their eggs. Repeat weekly for at least four weeks, then monthly.

This only works if your duvet and pillows are 60°C washable. Most aren't. Ours are.

How to use it during an infestation

  1. Strip the bed and wash all bedding at 60°C. Tumble dry on hot if the care label allows.
  2. Vacuum the mattress, bed frame and headboard, paying attention to seams and piping. Empty the vacuum outside.
  3. Fit the mattress encasement and zip it fully closed. Check the zip is pulled all the way to the end stop.
  4. Encase pillows and duvet (Option 1) or begin the weekly 60°C wash routine (Option 2).
  5. Leave the encasement on for at least 12 months. Bed bugs can survive many months without feeding. Do not open it to check.
  6. For an established infestation, use the encasement alongside professional pest control — it protects the bed while they treat the room.

Frequently asked questions

Does it stop bed bugs biting me?

Bugs sealed inside the mattress can't reach you. It doesn't kill bugs elsewhere in the room, which is why we recommend vacuuming, hot washing and, for a heavy infestation, a pest professional.

Can bed bugs get through the fabric?

No. The fabric is woven to 5 microns. The smallest bed bug egg is about 100 times larger than that.

What about the zip?

The zip runs the full length of the encasement and closes to an end stop. Zip it fully and check it each time you change the sheets.

Is it noisy or plasticky?

No. It's eucalyptus silk — soft, breathable, no crinkle. Customers tell us it feels like silk, not plastic.

Does it also protect against dust mites?

Yes. The same 5 micron barrier blocks dust mites and their allergens, which is what most of our customers buy it for.
